Dr. Laura Henagulph is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Bermuda. She can provide skilled interventions for adults, children and businesses.

Training

After obtaining a Master’s degree (MA) in English Literature at Balliol College, Oxford, Dr. Laura worked as a journalist and editor in eastern Europe for several years. Her interest in psychology developed while working as a volunteer for the Red Cross in France.

She went on to obtain her Doctorate in Psychology (DClinPsy) through Salomons, Canterbury Christchurch University. Her PhD research thesis was entitled: African Caribbean men with severe mental illness and conduct disorder: reducing violence and improving therapeutic engagement.

Experience

Following her graduation Dr. Laura worked in the specialist forensic mental health services directorate of East London NHS Foundation Trust. While there she obtained extensive experience working across both forensic secure inpatient and community outreach settings.

With a special interest in psychotherapeutic approaches, Dr. Laura has also completed further psychotherapy training at the world-renowned Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust and the Anna Freud Centre. She continues to receive weekly Clinical Supervision from the Head of Research at the Tavistock service.

Therapeutic Approaches

Dr. Laura’s primary interest is working with those who have histories of multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and who have gone on to develop personality disorder, adult attachment disorders and complex trauma syndromes. As a clinical psychologist in Bermuda since 2016 she has frequently observed the impact ACEs can have on adult development and stress resilience.

Dr. Laura has extensive training and experience in Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) and brief psychodynamic psychotherapies. She has recently completed a month-long training in Mentalization-based Treatment for Children (MBT-C), a time-limited approach for working with children aged 5 to 12.

Dr. Laura can also integrate Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Existential Humanistic Psychotherapy and Narrative Therapy into her work with adult individuals and groups. (See our Therapy-related Definitions page for more details.)

Following a life-long interest in working across modalities Dr. Laura has recently co-written, edited and published A Transdiciplinary Approach: Working with Individuals in a Sex Offender Programme (Rothwell & Henagulph, 2017). She has past and present experience of working together with drama therapists, art therapists and animal therapists. She finds this approach most beneficial for hard-to-engage clients who experience communication difficulties.

She is also trained to offer animal-assisted psychotherapy and Eagala Model equine-assisted psychotherapy.

Medico-legal and Forensic Assessment

Dr. Laura is highly experienced in assessing offending behaviours and associated risk to others, particularly in those with personality disorder or Intellectual (Learning) Disability (including cognition, capacity and fitness to plead) whether it be violence, sexual, arson or stalking risk. She has experience of providing reports for courts and giving oral evidence in both Magistrates’ and Supreme (Crown) courts.
