Sarah Franek LCSW

Training

Sarah received a Masters in Transpersonal Psychology from Sofia University, CA, and a Licensed Master of Social work from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services, NY. She holds a certificate from the American Institute of Biofeedback Technology (A.I.B.T.) and completed the Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training (200 hours) from Laughing Lotus Yoga School, NYC. Sarah participated in The Child and Family Traumatic Stress Intervention (CFTSI) Training at the Yale Child Study Center.

Experience

Sarah worked with the Stone Mountain Counseling Center in NYC administering Low Energy Neurofeedback (LENS) for children and adults. She was a clinical intern with The Beck Institute of Fordham University facilitating group therapy and narrative therapy for survivors of domestic violence and returning citizens previously incarcerated. She served as a clinical intern with The College of Mount Saint Vincent Counseling Services conducting psychological intakes and providing short-term psychotherapy to at will and mandated students as well as co-facilitating alcohol and other drugs (AOD) psychoeducation groups for mandated students.

Sarah worked with the award-winning WJCS-Trager Lemp Center: Treating Trauma & Promoting Resilience. The WJCS – Trager Lemp Center is the premier trauma treatment center in Westchester County. It has been at the forefront of recognizing and addressing the psychological trauma caused by sexual abuse, domestic and community violence, and other traumatic life events. Sarah provided comprehensive outpatient, evidence-based treatment programs to help adult and child survivors of trauma.

After leaving the WJCS Trager Lemp Center, Sarah opened a private practice in Westchester, NY.

Therapeutic Approaches

Sarah works with adolescents (ages 16 and up), young adults, families and adults. She has the ability to seamlessly incorporate various evidence-informed practices including Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Integrative Harm Reduction, Seeking Safety, Skills Training for Affecting Interpersonal Regulation and Narrative Story Telling.

She is experienced in assisting clients make life transitions, supporting the LGBTQ community, working through relationship challenges, grief work and overcoming creative blocks. In addition to talk therapy, she weaves mindfulness and breath work into her practice when appropriate.

Sarah believes in focusing on all aspects of a person’s well-being: mental, physical, financial, social, creative, and spiritual. She works together with her clients to understand their history of patterns of thinking and behavior that are no longer serving them, and to gain insight into why they developed, and how to help them evolve.

Sarah approaches the therapeutic experience as a creative collaboration. She works with her clients to help them create a more gratifying and better functioning present and future. Through building a relationship of care and trust she helps clients move forward to alleviate emotional pain, symptoms and improve overall well being and quality of life. She is warm, empathic and creative in her approach.

Sarah believes that making a safe space for clients to be heard and providing validation and encouragement are important first steps to answering the question posed by poet Mary Oliver – “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”

Sarah finds it an honor to sit with her clients and listen deeply to their stories. She finds it gratifying to assist them in re-authoring their lives such that they may come home to their most authentic, integrated, whole and joyful selves.
